Rules, camping & map first

High-intent questions most visitors ask before beach and summit planning — answered in plain English, then verified on official Parks Victoria pages.

Day icons vs overnight circuit

Almost every first Prom plan fails or succeeds here — not at the lookout. Choose the path that matches fitness, bookings and season. Do not invent a hybrid fantasy that stacks Southern Circuit miles onto a family beach day.

What kind of Prom day?

Filter ideas below. Peak summer changes parking more than it changes the views — always verify conditions.

Start with these three

All walks

Prom realism is not optional reading

  • Peak summer: arrive early, carpool, expect vehicle limits and full car parks.
  • No dogs, no fires year-round (including solid-fuel BBQs), no casual drones.
  • No fuel or EV charging at Tidal River — last services at Yanakie.
  • Ocean swimming: rips, cold water, never alone — check water-safety guidance.
  • Overnight circuit: self-sufficient only; boardwalk/track status can cancel plans.
  • Official safety: Parks Victoria safety

Plans that respect peak crowds

Printable timelines with packing notes and honest skip lists — the gap official hubs rarely fill.

Common Wilsons Prom questions

Short answers for planning. Official bookings, vehicle limits and track status always win over any blog — including this one.

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Is there an entry fee for Wilsons Promontory National Park?

Day visitor entry is free according to Parks Victoria. Camping and accommodation at Tidal River still require fees and advance bookings — especially in summer school holidays and Easter. Always confirm on official Parks Victoria pages.

Do I need to book Tidal River camping?

Yes in any competitive period. Peak windows often book months ahead and may include multi-night minimum stays. Book only through official Parks Victoria booking channels. This site never affiliates park camping fees.

What should I do first on a first visit?

Most first-timers based at Tidal River combine Mount Oberon Summit Walk (morning) with Squeaky Beach and/or Norman Beach. Families often start with Norman Beach only. Overnight Southern Circuit hiking is for experienced parties with permits — not a first casual visit.

Are dogs allowed at Wilsons Prom?

No dogs or other pets. Assistance animals only under conditions published by Parks Victoria. Do not bring pets hoping for an exception.

Is this site official Parks Victoria?

No. This is an independent unofficial guide published by Farming Domains (Ian Piggott). For bookings, alerts, track status and rules use Parks Victoria only.
