How to get there

1. From Tidal River follow park signs to Lilly Pilly Gully; carry the current visitor map.
2. Arrive with water and a layer — forest can feel cooler and damper than the beach even on the same calendar day.
3. Confirm open/closed status after storms on Parks Victoria channels before you commit the afternoon.
4. Peak summer: still arrive with a plan for parking at the trailhead; it is quieter than Squeaky but not empty on fine weekends.

How to do it (step by step)

1. Walk the circuit at a conversational pace — this is a nature day, not a summit race.
2. Stay on formed track and boardwalk; vegetation recovery is slow and shortcuts are obvious scars.
3. Birdsong and quiet are the product — headphones off if you can; teach kids the “soft voice” rule.
4. After heavy rain, boardwalks can be slick — poles and careful footing beat heroics.
5. Turn around or reverse if a section is closed; do not invent bush detours around tape.

When this walk wins

Choose Lilly Pilly when Squeaky parking is a war zone, Oberon is in cloud, the forecast is hot and you want shade, or the group needs a quieter nature day after social beach chaos.

It is still a real walk with undulation and distance in the mid single kilometres class — verify signed figures. “Forest” does not mean “flat boardwalk promenade for prams without checking the map.”

After rain realism

Mud, slick timber and leeches are part of Gippsland bush walking culture. Wear shoes you accept getting dirty; pack a dry pair in the car if you hate the drive home squelching.

Storm closures are competence, not inconvenience. If Parks Victoria or the visitor centre says closed, pick Norman Beach or a rest day.

Wildlife and quiet

Birds and occasional larger wildlife reward patience. Do not chase animals for video. Snakes in warm months: stop, give space, do not relocate.

Insect repellent is practical kit here more often than on the open granite summits — especially after rain or at dusk edges of the day.
