Things to do at Wilsons Promontory
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with Parks Victoria
Most first visits revolve around Mount Oberon plus Squeaky and/or Norman Beach, with forest or lookout days on longer stays. Overnight Southern Circuit is a different sport. Do not try to collect every track on a first visit.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park camping fees, Parks Victoria bookings and official permits are never affiliated.

Day one rule
Pick one primary experience (usually Oberon or a beach). Do not collect every track on day one.
Weather / energy bail-out
Norman Beach, short lookouts or rest beat a forced summit in heat or cloud. Bail-outs are competence.
Overnight filter
If the group has never multi-day hiked, stay at Tidal River. Southern Circuit is earned.
- 1
Mount Oberon Summit Walk
High volume · Grade 3 planning · 2–3 hrs typical
The classic first-visit climb from Telegraph Saddle for Norman Bay, Tidal River and Squeaky Beach views. Steep sections, peak parking pressure, hard turn-around culture.
- 2
Squeaky Beach
Icon beach · easy access · family-friendly with supervision
Famous quartz sand that squeaks, granite frames and summer crowds. Easy access, real ocean swim risk, early arrival in peak.
- 3
Norman Beach
Easy · hub beach · campers’ favourite
On Tidal River’s doorstep — lowest-friction sand day, sunset classic, recovery after Oberon. Still ocean water.
- 4
Lilly Pilly Gully Circuit
Moderate circuit · shade · nature pace
Forest contrast when beaches are packed or weather is coastal-wild. Birds, boardwalks, mud after rain.
- 5
Pillar Point & Three Bays
Moderate · lookouts · photography
Coastal lookouts and multi-bay walking for intermediate days beyond a single beach stop.
- 6
Wildlife watching (etiquette first)
Year-round · dusk caution · no feeding
Wombats, wallabies, kangaroos and birds — distance is respect. Never feed. Slow on dusk roads.
- 7
Southern Circuit overnight
Advanced · multi-day · status-critical
Experienced self-sufficient hiking to coastal camps. Permits required. Boardwalk status can rewrite the trip. Not a first Prom visit.
