Day vs overnight decision tree · Tidal River booking realism · summer vehicle limits · Mount Oberon + beaches ·
packing · official Parks Victoria links
Verify everything officially. Camping bookings, vehicle limits, shuttle operation, track and
boardwalk status, and temporary closures change. Use
Parks Victoria
and the Tidal River Visitor Centre. This is an independent unofficial guide — not affiliated with Parks Victoria
or the Victorian Government.
Day entry is free ($0) according to Parks Victoria public guidance. Camping and roofed
accommodation at Tidal River still require fees and advance bookings. This planner never sells park camping.
1. Before you leave base
☐ Check Parks Victoria park page / change of conditions for your dates
☐ Tidal River camping booked (if staying) — official bookings only
☐ Gateway bed booked if camp is full (Yanakie / Foster / Fish Creek)
☐ Fuel plan — no fuel or EV charging at Tidal River; fill at Yanakie
☐ Weather + swim decision culture agreed with the group
☐ Screenshot bookings and alerts while you still have signal
☐ Tell someone your plan and expected return (day trip or overnight)
☐ Hard turn-around time written down for summit / long coastal days
2. Day icons vs overnight (pick one primary path)
Tidal River day icons (most first-timers)
☐ Mount Oberon Summit Walk (morning preferred)
☐ Squeaky Beach and/or Norman Beach
☐ Free day entry · camp only if booked
☐ Arrive before 10 am in peak summer
☐ Telegraph Saddle access / shuttle status checked
Southern Circuit overnight (experienced only)
☐ Parks Victoria hikers camps booked
☐ Self-sufficient packing (no open fires)
☐ Live track / boardwalk status confirmed
☐ Water + weather + emergency plan
☐ Not a first casual Prom visit
3. Walk / beach decision tree
First visit / one solid dayMount Oberon morning → Squeaky or Norman afternoon. Do not stack every moderate walk.
Family / low energyNorman Beach first. Squeaky only if naps and moods allow. Oberon can wait.
Hot beach crowds / want shadeLilly Pilly Gully circuit or shorter forest options; beach later or next day.
Intermediate multi-day stayAdd Pillar Point / Three Bays, Tongue Point or Mount Bishop after icons — one hard effort per day.
Experienced overnightSouthern Circuit only with permits and live status. Redesign if Sealers (or any segment) is closed.
Melbourne day trip (ambitious)Pre-dawn leave · early park arrival · one primary walk + one beach · hard exit time for safe driving.
4. Summer vehicle & camping realism
Peak summer is busy. Parks Victoria can limit vehicles park-wide. Maximum two vehicles per camping
site is enforced. Arrive early, carpool, prefer weekdays, bring water if you may wait.
☐ Aim arrive before 10 am in peak periods
☐ Carpool planned (not “we’ll all drive separately”)
☐ Peak multi-night minimum stays understood (verify current booking rules)
☐ No dogs (assistance animals only under published conditions)
☐ No fires year-round (including solid-fuel BBQs)
☐ Drones / generators restricted as published — do not assume yes
5. Classic day skeleton — Oberon + beaches
Timing (typical)
Early: Telegraph Saddle / shuttle
Oberon return: ~2–3 hrs walking + logistics
Midday reset: food, shade, fatigue check
Afternoon: Squeaky Beach
Evening: Norman Beach sunset (if camped)
Success metrics
Whole group finishes safely
Turned around if heat / weather demanded
Did not invent a second hard climb
Swim decision based on conditions, not FOMO
6. Packing — day visitor baseline
☐ Wind / waterproof shell
☐ Grip shoes (sand + granite)
☐ Sun hat, sunglasses, high SPF
☐ Day pack 20–30 L
☐ Water 2L+ per adult on warm days
☐ Lunch + emergency snacks
☐ Insect repellent (bush / after rain)
☐ Simple first aid + blister care
☐ Headlamp (short days / early starts)
☐ Power bank + offline alert screenshots
☐ Swim kit only if conditions allow
☐ Cashless payment for any services
7. Packing — overnight circuit (extra)
☐ Shelter + sleep system (cool nights)
☐ Stove (no open fires)
☐ Water treatment + capacity
☐ Navigation (offline) + map
☐ Emergency comms plan (as appropriate)
☐ Dry bags for coastal camps
☐ Food for full days + reserve
☐ Confirmed camp bookings + status re-check
8. Coastal & wildlife safety realism
☐ Ocean swimming: rips, cold water, never alone — check Parks Victoria water-safety guidance
☐ Wet granite is slippery — rock-hop carefully
☐ Never feed wildlife; keep distance (wombats are not pets)
☐ Drive slowly at dusk — wildlife on roads near Tidal River
