Tongue Point Walk
Area: Day walks beyond the icons
Guide updated · Camping bookings, vehicle limits, shuttle hours, track status (including…
A solid intermediate day walk for visitors who have done the icon beaches and want more coastal walking without committing to overnight packing. Expect wind, views and a proper walk — not a five-minute lookout stroll.
- Moderate coastal / headland walk
- 2–3 hours typical
- About 4–5 km class return (verify signed figures)
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: Quieter headland scenery for intermediate walkers
Distance, grade, time, shuttle status, boardwalk closures and open/closed advice change — verify on Parks Victoria before you go.

Where you start
Signed Tongue Point trailhead (confirm on park map)
Trailhead and parking details are signed within the park network. Carry the current park map; do not rely solely on third-party apps for closures. Confirm distance and grade on Parks Victoria materials for your date. Visitor centre staff at Tidal River are the best live check for diversions after storms.
How to get there
- From Tidal River using park signage and the current visitor map — pick up a paper map even if you love apps.
- Fuel and water sorted before longer coastal days — no bowser or reliable EV charging at Tidal River; last services at Yanakie.
- Start early in summer heat; headland wind and UV often rise later in the day.
- Peak weekends: leave buffer for parking and shared roads near the hub — do not assume a quiet secret trailhead.
- Check Parks Victoria alerts the morning you walk; temporary closures and track works happen.
How to do it (step by step)
- Start with a weather and wind check — headlands are poor places for surprise storms or gale-force discomfort.
- Walk at a sustainable pace; turn around if wind becomes unsafe, fog kills visibility, or the group is fading.
- Stay on formed track; pack out all rubbish; use toilets at trailheads where provided.
- Agree a reverse time before you start so “just a bit further” does not become a late finish into wildlife-hour driving.
- Carry a shell, water and sun protection even if the car park felt calm — exposure changes on the point.
- If tape or signs close a section, reverse — do not invent cliff-edge detours for photos.
Who Tongue Point is for
Intermediate walkers who want coastal scenery beyond Squeaky’s car park without booking hikers camps. Mixed groups with at least one competent adult pacing. Not a toddler promenade and not a wilderness overnight exam.
If icons are unfinished (Oberon, Squeaky, Norman), finish those first on a first visit. Tongue Point shines as day two or three variety when the group still has legs and curiosity.
Families with older children who handled Norman Beach and a short lookout well can treat this as a “next step” coastal day — still with reverse-time discipline.
Filter vs Southern Circuit
Completing Tongue Point does not mean you are ready for Sealers overnight. Different skill floor, permits and self-sufficiency. Use it as coastal walking practice and honesty about pack-free day fitness only.
If wind forecasts look hostile, pick Lilly Pilly forest or Norman Beach instead — competence includes Plan B.
If someone in the group struggled on Oberon’s descent, do not “redeem the day” with another exposed coastal push. Rest is a plan.
When this walk wins (and when it does not)
Wins: cooler mornings, shoulder seasons, multi-night stays after icons are done, and days when you want coast without Squeaky’s peak car-park theatre.
Loses: first afternoon after a Melbourne drive, gale warnings, heatwaves for unfit groups, or stacking it after Oberon + Squeaky already emptied the tank.
Photography culture still needs track manners — no rock-stacking, no barrier climbing, no shortcutting vegetation for “the shot.”
What to carry on a headland day
Water, shell, sun hat, solid shoes with grip, and a simple first-aid / blister kit. Headlands punish under-packing more than suburban rail-trails.
Phone signal is patchy — screenshot maps and alerts while you still have reception at Tidal River or Yanakie. Offline notes beat optimism.
Optional Amazon-style kit searches live on the gear page and trail monetisation chips — only after the walk plan is solid. Park fees are never affiliated.

Extra tips
- Good “intermediate filter” between easy beaches and Southern Circuit ambitions.
- Combine with a relaxed Norman Beach evening, not another hard summit the same afternoon.
- If you are testing multi-day fitness, this is still a day walk — do not confuse it with overnight readiness.
- Visitor centre can confirm current diversions when you collect a map.
- Shoulder seasons often feel quieter than January, but long weekends still pack the park.
- Pair with Lilly Pilly Gully on a multi-day stay for forest contrast on a different day.
