How to choose

Hot beach crowds → Lilly Pilly Gully. Want lookouts without Oberon queues → Pillar Point. Want longer coastal legs without overnight packing → Tongue Point / Three Bays combinations. Want a second hill → Mount Bishop.

Always leave a recovery day or beach evening after hard efforts. “We can do all of them tomorrow” is how blistered groups skip the last day entirely.

Lilly Pilly Gully — forest contrast

Best when Squeaky is full, Oberon is in cloud, or the forecast is hot and you want shade. Expect boardwalks, undulation and after-rain mud. Insect repellent earns its keep more often here than on open granite.

Trail page: Lilly Pilly Gully Circuit. Pair with Mount Bishop on multi-day stays if legs allow — not both hard after a Melbourne drive day.

Pillar Point, Three Bays and Tongue Point

These extend coastal walking beyond icon beach car parks. Pick lookout-only vs longer multi-bay ambition before you leave the car. Headland wind and cliff edges need shells and supervision.

Tongue Point is a solid intermediate filter between easy beaches and Southern Circuit overnight — completing it does not equal overnight readiness.

Mount Bishop — second hill

Use Bishop when you want elevation variety or Oberon logistics are chaos and you still want a hill. It is not a secret replacement for the classic Oberon bay panorama.

Avoid stacking Bishop + Oberon the same day for mixed groups. Norman Beach recovery is a feature, not a failure.

Suggested multi-day order

Day 1: Norman reset. Day 2: Oberon + one beach. Day 3: Lilly Pilly or Pillar/Tongue variety. Exit: coffee in Foster. Adjust for weather and bookings — the shoulder-season explorer itinerary on this site follows a similar shape.

FAQ — Day walks

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Which day walk if Squeaky and Oberon are done?

Lilly Pilly for forest and shade, Pillar Point for lookouts, Tongue Point for a longer coastal day, Mount Bishop for a second hill. Pick one primary effort per day for mixed groups.

Can I do these as a Melbourne day trip?

Technically some people try, but day walks beyond icons work better with a Tidal River or gateway overnight. The Melbourne day-trip itinerary on this site prioritises Oberon + one beach for a reason.

Are these suitable before Southern Circuit overnight?

They build coastal and hill fitness for day packs only. Overnight circuit skill, permits and self-sufficiency are a higher floor. See Southern Circuit area and trail pages.
