Squeaky vs Norman
Norman Beach wins for proximity to camp and low-friction evenings. Squeaky Beach wins for the famous sand soundtrack and postcard granite frames — it is the beach most people mean when they say “Prom photos.” Most multi-day stays do both.

Squeaky Beach peak behaviour
Arrive early or visit midweek in January. Parking is part of the product. Do not invent spots on vegetation. Pair with Oberon morning only if energy remains — otherwise Norman is the kinder afternoon.
Dry sand squeaks; wet sand may not. Granite is slippery when wet. Leave no trace on an icon beach.
Norman Beach as the social hub beach
On Tidal River’s doorstep: best family default, best post-Oberon reset, best sunset without a transfer. Still ocean water — supervise and assess conditions.
Day visitors must not colonise booked campsites. Wildlife at dusk: distance, no feeding, slow or no driving.
How beach days fit a Prom trip
Icon day: Oberon morning + one beach afternoon. Family day: Norman blocks with optional short Squeaky. Recovery day: Norman only. Photography day: early Squeaky, then rest.
Pillar Point / Three Bays can extend coast walking once icons are done — not as a forced stack after a hard summit for mixed groups.

Why does the sand squeak?
The famous squeak comes from fine, rounded quartz sand grains rubbing together when dry — a natural quirk, not a gimmick. Wet sand may not squeak as well.
Which beach is better after Mount Oberon?
If the group is tired or parking is poor, Norman Beach. If energy and logistics allow, Squeaky Beach for the icon sand. Do not force both after a hard climb in peak heat.
Can I swim?
Only when conditions suit your group. These are ocean beaches with rip and cold-water risk. Never swim alone; follow Parks Victoria water-safety guidance.
