Southern Circuit introduction (planning skeleton)

2–4 days overnight (experienced hikers only)Best for: Parties already competent at multi-day coastal hiking

Booked hikers camps, self-sufficient packing, live track status (including Sealers Cove boardwalk realities), conservative daily distances. Not a first Prom visit.

This is a planning skeleton, not a turn-by-turn that replaces Parks Victoria permits and maps. Overnight coastal hiking at the Prom is a privilege with rules: booked camps, no fires, pack-out hygiene, and respect for closures.

Before you pack, confirm whether Sealers Cove boardwalk (or any other segment) is open. Rebuild periods have forced long alternate approaches. If the live map does not match your brochure fantasy, change the fantasy — or cancel.

If your group’s hardest trip was a single night next to the car at Tidal River, do day walks first (Oberon, beaches, Lilly Pilly). Earn overnight competence. Peer pressure is a classic injury pathway on coastal packs.

Public notices in the mid-2020s have included boardwalk works, campground closures and temporary management windows — always re-verify. This page is never your live status authority.

Track status, bookings, vehicle limits, shuttle hours and weather change — verify on Parks Victoria before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. Free day entry does not mean empty car parks or walk-up camping in peak.

Timeline

  1. Weeks–months before

    Book camps + study status

Official Parks Victoria overnight bookings only. Read change-of-conditions and any project pages affecting Sealers or related tracks. Build a written cancellation plan if key boardwalks are closed. Match camp spacing to the weakest pack-carrier’s honest daily distance.

  2. One week out

    Gear shakedown + weather window

Weigh packs. Test stove, shelter and water treatment. Drop luxury weight. If forecast trends severe, delay — ego does not keep you warm on an exposed bay.

  3. Day 0

Stage at Tidal River / Yanakie

Final weather call, fuel (Yanakie), water strategy, group gear check. Visitor centre briefing if available. File a trip plan with someone reliable outside the park. Confirm emergency comms plan.

  4. Day 1

    Conservative first leg

Start early with full packs on currently open tracks only. Arrive at booked camp with daylight margin. No hero miles. Sit out heat peaks if needed. Camp only where booked.

  5. Day 2–3

    Bay-to-bay as booked

Refuge, Waterloo or other booked sites per your permit and live open network. Sit out bad weather. Turn around for injury. Leave no trace; no open fires — stove only under current rules.

  6. Exit day

    Walk out + recover

Exit to vehicle access with food in reserve. Do not book a red-eye drive to Melbourne the same evening if the group is wrecked. Debrief honestly: what to change next time.

Parking & access tips

  • Overnight parking rules — follow signed areas only.
  • Do not leave food smells that train wildlife at trailheads.
  • Secure vehicles; do not advertise “gone for four days” with gear on seats.
  • Stage at Tidal River / Yanakie the night before — not a 4 am Melbourne departure with full packs.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Any party without prior overnight experience
  • Kids’ first multi-day as a “character building” surprise
  • “We’ll see if the boardwalk is open when we get there” without a full Plan B
  • Stacking a full circuit after a first-ever Prom day walk the same week for unfit groups
  • Using day-walk packing lists as if they were multi-day systems

Extra tips

Hard filters

  • If any adult is uncomfortable with self-sufficiency: do not go
  • If track status is unclear: verify with visitor centre / Parks Victoria — do not guess
  • If heatwave or severe weather: delay
  • If a key boardwalk is closed: redesign or cancel, never bush-bash
  • If bookings do not match your brochure map: change the plan, not the park rules

What this is not

  • Not a glam glamping product
  • Not a drive-to-each-bay car tour
  • Not a substitute for official maps and bookings
  • Not a first Prom visit for mixed novices

Earn the circuit first

  • Do Oberon + beaches as day products before packing overnight
  • Practice a car-camp night at Tidal River with full kit before coastal bays
  • Read live change-of-conditions the week you leave — not last year’s blog

  • Southern Circuit overnight hikes (Sealers, Refuge, Waterloo & related)The Prom’s legendary overnight coastal hiking system: booked hikers camps, heavy packs, self-sufficiency and genuine remoteness between beautiful bays. Not a casual first Prom visit. Always verify current track and boardwalk status (Sealers Cove boardwalk works have periodically forced long alternative approaches).
  • Mount Oberon Summit WalkThe non-negotiable first-visit walk for many Prom groups: climb from Telegraph Saddle to Mount Oberon for the classic bay panorama. Steep, rewarding, and extremely popular in peak summer — plan parking, shuttle and early starts.
