A Wilsons Prom day from Melbourne is often 12–16 hours house-to-house. If you cannot leave before dawn, book Tidal River or Yanakie — or shrink to one beach, not three walks.

Decision: if you cannot leave Melbourne before dawn in peak season, do not promise Mount Oberon, Squeaky Beach and a civilised dinner at home. Book a night (Tidal River official, or Yanakie/Foster commercial) or shrink to one honest beach with a hard reverse clock. Free day entry does not shorten the C444.
Parks Victoria describes about three hours’ drive from Melbourne to the park entrance, then about 30 km to Tidal River. Wildlife on roads near dusk is a real hazard. This is planning from official drive notes — not a timed field diary, not a 6:12 am log.

On a state map the Prom looks like “Gippsland, doable Saturday.” On the clock it is highway + fuel + vehicle limits + a steep granite climb + ocean + the same highway tired. Failure mode one: leaving after brunch and inheriting a full park. Failure mode two: nailing Oberon then adding Three Bays because the photos look close.
Turnaround: a hard “leave the park by” time agreed at Yanakie, not at the summit when everyone is cooked.

Tidal River official camping (never affiliated here) buys the early Oberon that makes the combo honest. If peak is sold out, Yanakie is last fuel and an early alarm; Foster adds food. Do not treat a Melbourne 11 am leave as equivalent to a Tidal River 7 am start.

Can fit people still day-trip?
Yes, with a pre-dawn start, one primary walk, one beach, and a reverse clock. Fitness does not delete traffic or wildlife at dusk.
Is the Southern Circuit a good add-on after a day-trip?
No. Overnight circuit is a different product with bookings and (currently published) Sealers boardwalk closure realism. Do day icons first on a separate trip.
